Income Tax

New Tax Regime vs Old Tax Regime —

Old Tax Regime

  • Tax rates
  • Tax planning

New Tax Regime (Default)

  • Tax rates
IncomeOld Regime TaxNew Regime Tax
0 (rebate)₹0 (rebate)

Rule of Thumb: अगर आपकी investments और deductions ₹3.75 लाख से ज़्यादा हैं तो Old Regime बेहतर है।

इस पूरे article में हम Old Tax Regime के हिसाब से बात करेंगे — क्योंकि tax saving करनी है तो Old Regime में ही sense बनता है।

Deduction

Investment/PaymentLock-in PeriodExpected Returns
EPF (Employee Provident Fund)Retirement
PPF (Public Provident Fund)15
ELSS Mutual Fund3
Tax Saving FD5
NSC (National Savings Certificate)5
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
Life Insurance PremiumPolicy termCoverage
Home Loan Principal—Asset building
Children’s Tuition Fees—Education

Tax Saving:

2 — Section 80D: Health Insurance Premium

Deduction Limits:

Deduction Limit
Self + Spouse + Children₹25,000
Self + Spouse + Children + Parents (60
Self + Spouse + Children + Parents (60
Self (60+) + Parents (60+)₹1,00,000

Preventive Health Check-up

Deduction (Section 80CCD(1B))

80C deduction: ₹1,50,000
80CCD(1B) NPS: + ₹50,000
─────────────────────────────────
Total deduction: ₹2,00,000

Tax saving in 30% bracket: ₹62,400

Tiers:

HRA Exemption Calculation

HRA exemption

  1. Actual HRA received from employer
  2. Actual rent paid − 10% of Basic Salary
  3. 50% of Basic Salary (Metro cities) या 40% (Non-metro)

Example:

DetailsAmount
Basic Salary₹40,000/month
HRA Received₹20,000/month
Actual Rent Paid₹18,000/month
50% of Basic (Metro)₹20,000/month
Rent − 10% Basic₹18,000 − ₹4,000 = ₹14,000
HRA Exemption (lowest)₹14,000/month = ₹1,68,000/year

Tax saving: ₹1,68,000 × 20% = ₹33,600 annually

Documents:

  • Rent receipts (हर महीने की)
  • Rent agreement

5 — Home Loan: Double Tax Benefit

Deduction 1 — Principal Repayment (Section 80C)

Deduction 2 — Interest Payment (Section 24(b))

Total Home Loan Tax Benefit:

80C (Principal): ₹1,50,000
Section 24(b) (Interest): ₹2,00,000
─────────────────────────────────
Total: ₹3,50,000

Tax saving in 30% bracket: ₹1,09,200 annually!

Rented property के लिए interest deduction की no upper limit है लेकिन set-off rules apply होते हैं।

Deduction

  • Old Tax Regime में: ₹50,000 की flat deduction
  • New Tax Regime में: ₹75,000 की flat deduction

Tax saving: ₹50,000 × 30% = ₹15,600

7 — Education Loan: Section 80E

Key Points:

  • Duration: Loan repayment
  • Who can claim: खुद student, parents, spouse, या legal guardian

8 — LTA: Leave Travel Allowance

Rules:

  • Current block: 2022–2025 (अगला block 2026–2029)

LTA Claim

  2. Employer को claim form submit करें
  3. HR department process

Tax Benefit

Deduction Categories:

Donation TypeDeduction
PM Relief Fund, National Defence Fund100% deduction, no limit
Approved charitable organisations50% deduction
Political parties (Section 80GGC)100% deduction

Wealth Building

ELSS vs Other 80C Options:

OptionLock-inExpected ReturnTax on Maturity
12–18%LTCG (10% above ₹1.25L)
7.1%Tax-free
Tax Saving FD5 साल6.5–7%Fully taxable
7.7%Taxable

Best ELSS Funds 2026:

  • Mirae Asset ELSS Tax Saver — Consistent performer, large cap heavy
  • Quant ELSS Tax Saver — High returns, slightly more aggressive
  • Axis ELSS Tax Saver — Stable, good for conservative investors
  • Canara Robeco ELSS Tax Saver — Low expense ratio

SIP Strategy: ₹12,500 per month ELSS SIP → ₹1,50,000 annually → Full 80C benefit + wealth creation।

  2. 80D: Family health insurance
  4. HRA: Rent receipts
